The Takayama Festival is the collective name for the Sanno Matsuri of spring and the Hachiman Matsuri held at Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine in October. A feeling of stepping in a time machine back to the 15th century is overwhelming when witnessing this large parade of a 1,000 people, especially because of the costumes and music performances. When the festival first began, the wealthy merchants and famously skilled craftsmen of the region were not permitted to put their wealth into houses as that would have shown up the samurai class, but nothing could stop them from constructing these spectacular floats.
