Performed by 11 priests of the Todai-ji Temple in Nara City this ancient religious festival involves the priests running to and fro along the corridors of Nigatsu-do waving huge pine torches. It is believed that if you are showered in embers that you are blessed with good luck for the coming year and be protected from evil things. The festival, dating back to AD752, takes place over 14 days during which the priests pray for a rich harvest and world peace. The Omizutori (drawing of sacred water), the highlight of the festival, is performed early on the morning of the 13th. The water which only springs forth in front of the temple building on this very day is said to have special curative powers and is offered to the Buddhist deities as a gift. The event is also seen to mark the end of winter and the start of the warmer spring weather.
