The once banned parade, under the name of Torimon due to the extravagance of the parade, was given a new name of Dontaku, began in the 15th century, as a New Year thank you gift from the people of the city to their feudal lords.
A colourful procession of 12,000 “matsubayashi” folk music players in Japanese ensembles and brass bands lead by 3 gods of good fortune attracts 2 million visitors a year. A further 16,000 singers and dancers perform on stages around central Fukuoka, visitors are welcome, so don’t hesitate to join in.
