One of the three largest festivals of Kyoto is the held at the Heian Jingu Shrine. The highlight of the festival is the Jidai Gyoretsu (Historic Pageant). A procession of a mikoshi (portable shrine) and a suite of some 2,000 people dressed in costumes representing various eras of Kyoto’s 1,200-year history parade through the city. The procession is lead by a band impersonating the fife and drums corps of the Meiji Restoration Royal Army. This is a fine opportunity for taking a close look at the chronological changes in Japanese costumes taking you from the grandeur of the Meiji era back through the fierce samurai and elegant geisha of the shogunate to the elegant costumes of the Heian period when Kyoto was first established.
